Students makes the case for Smart Mouth

The Case for Smart Mouth Pizza

Students at Nation Ford High in Fort Mill, South Carolina–where Smart Mouth Pizza is served for lunch–recently took on as a class project the challenge of convincing another school system that doesn’t yet serve the product to consider the program.
See and hear for yourself how these three students feel about the product, how well has been received in their school, and also the benefits of having students actively involved.

We thank teacher Lynn Marsh for her guidance and approval on this project, and we appreciate the great job that Megan, Catherine and Will did in preparing and representing the Smart Mouth Pizza business.

We think they deserve an A.  But the real grade is up to Ms. Marsh!

As for that other school district, the choice is up to them, and we’re satisfied knowing that these students made the case on our behalf!

Our View: Healthier Fundraising for Schools

It isn’t a secret — schools today need additional funding for activities. And selling meals and snacks to students is a popular way to raise this much-needed money. But the challenge is doing this without undermining the school’s own lunch programs, stepping on the toes of community businesses, taking away from class time, and tying-up resources best used elsewhere.

The success of a school’s fundraising efforts must be measured not just in dollars raised, but in the goodwill and benefit to the school, the community and most importantly to the health and well being of the students.

I know of one school’s “successful” fundraising program that has so far generated nearly $20,000 for the school. A pretty hefty sum that can go a long way to supporting activities and programs at the school. But we have to ask, at what cost?

This fundraising program is based on bringing in outside fast food products to sell to the students during lunch hours at the school. Perhaps that is just fair competition you say—giving the kids what they want. But what must be considered, is the health and nutritional needs of the students. These products are not sold in the cafeteria, so they are not technically required to meet healthy nutrition guidelines. Not only that, but this type of program can do real damage to the school lunch program itself, as far as its ability to meet requirements and funding guidelines that are based on increasing—not decreasing—school lunch participation rates. Perhaps of even greater concern, is the negative message that this sends to all students about the desirability and quality of the school lunch menu.

Smart Mouth Pizza is a strong advocate of school fundraising. In fact, we support numerous programs, both in school and out of school, to help fund student activities, including our School of Excellence Student Video Competition, Game Day Pizza sales promotions, and still in development a Smart Mouth Pizza Kit Program.  We’d love to hear any ideas you have for us to help in fundraising in your schools and districts.

Smart Mouth Pizza is committed to increasing the involvement of students in positive ways, and to increasing overall participation in school nutrition programs, by offering cafeteria choices they like and encouraging them to eat lunch at school.

Let’s challenge students and school administrators to raise the bar on raising funds! And let’s encourage more vendors to do what Smart Mouth Pizza does—support schools with creative fundraising programs that don’t compromise on nutritional standards or overall lunch program participation. That’s the best way to ensure a healthy extracurricular budget, a healthy school lunch program, and healthy students!

Being Smart: The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act

Effective the school year beginning July 1, 2011, school nutrition programs will be required to move towards charging paid meal category students at a price that is on average equal to the difference between free meal reimbursement and paid meal reimbursement.  Schools that charge less than this amount are required to gradually increase their prices over time until they meet the requirement.  The law establishes a maximum annual increase in the federally required paid increases of 10 cents annually, but schools may choose to increase the price at a higher amount.

There is much concern about loss of participation with the higher prices.  Now more than ever it is important to offer meals that have the perceived value that Smart Mouth Pizza offers.  Many of our schools have been selling the Smart Mouth Pizza using a tiered pricing model with much success.  You can raise your meal price with Smart Mouth Pizza with confidence that your students will pay a higher price for the quality that they will receive.

While you have the option of raising your meal price by only .10 per year you may want to consider offering some high end meals like Smart Mouth Pizza and take advantage of the entire increase.  There is nothing in the bill prohibiting you from raising certain meals at a different rate than others.  Gradually raise your normal lines each year, but by making Smart Mouth Pizza an offered meal you can get the higher meal price with confidence from the first day.

The legislation states that schools will receive an additional 6 cents in meal reimbursement.   School nutrition programs that comply with the final updated meal pattern requirements will be eligible to receive an additional 6 cents in meal reimbursement.  The final meal pattern requirements are expected to be released in 2012.  It is anticipated that for those schools meeting compliance, that the 6 cents reimbursement could be realized by SY 2013-2014.

Smart Mouth Pizza has already started work towards small modifications in its product in anticipation of what the new USDA guidelines will be.  You can be assured that when the time comes we will be ready.  Modifications to the level of sodium will be our biggest challenge.  Beginning next year we will gradually lower levels of sodium to meet the required target levels set by the USDA.  They are giving our industry 10 years to do this.

Why Smart Mouth?

Smart Mouth Pizza meets or exceeds current nutrition standards for healthy school lunches.   We provide a program that makes it easy and profitable for schools to ensure their meal programs appeal to students, deliver required nutritional components and enhance the vital relationship between student-customer and school-food retailer.
